Expiration Date
The expiration date is the last day an option or futures contract exists; after it, the contract is exercised, settled or becomes worthless.
The expiration date is the day a derivatives contract stops existing. For options, it is the last chance to exercise; for futures, it is when the contract settles. Knowing what happens on that day helps traders avoid surprise exercises, deliveries and losses.

Expiration date in plain words
The expiration date is when an option contract ends — the last day it can be exercised.1
After that day the contract is no longer valid.2
Once an option expires, it simply stops existing.3
What to check before expiry
Find the exact date
Check the contract specs for the last trading day and expiry time.
Know the style
Check the style: US equity options are American-style, so the holder can exercise any time up to expiry.2
Check moneyness
Compare the underlying price with the strike.
Expect automatic exercise
Know the default: standard equity options that are in the money at expiry — a call with the share price above the strike, or a put with it below — are usually exercised automatically.2
Plan futures settlement
Close or roll Futures Contract before expiry unless you want cash settlement or delivery.
Watch time decay
Expect time value to shrink as expiry approaches, for calls and puts alike.4
Worked examples
Example 1 — Call expires in the money
$200 profitA hypothetical call with a $50 strike; the stock closes at $55 on expiry. One contract covers 100 shares.
| Intrinsic value | ($55 − $50) × 100 = $500 |
| Premium paid | $300 |
| Net | $500 − $300 = $200 |
The option finished in the money, so it would normally be exercised automatically at expiry.2
Example 2 — Put expires worthless
$150 premium lostA hypothetical put with a $40 strike costs $150; the stock closes at $44 on expiry.
| Intrinsic value | $0 |
| Loss | −$150 |
The out-of-the-money option lapsed and simply ceased to exist.3
Example 3 — Futures convergence
Gap closes to near zeroA hypothetical future trades at $102 a week before expiry while spot is $100.
| Gap a week out | $2 |
| Gap at expiry | ≈ $0 |
Cash and futures prices converge as delivery approaches, so they met at the end.1
Options vs futures at expiry
| Aspect | Options | Futures |
|---|---|---|
| Holder's choice | Exercise or let expire | Must settle or roll |
| Out of the money | Expires worthless | No such thing; gains or losses settle |
| Settlement | Shares or cash | Cash or physical delivery |
| Price near expiry | Time value shrinks | Converges with spot |
Why expiry dates matter
Choosing contracts
Pick Options with enough time for your idea to work.
Rolling futures
Move Futures Contract to a later month before Settlement.
Managing margin
Volatility events
Expiry days can bring higher Volatility and Liquidity swings.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
- Defines a clear end to the risk.
- Lets traders choose time horizons.
- Creates predictable roll dates.
- Convergence anchors futures to spot.
Disadvantages
- Time value shrinks as expiry nears.
- Automatic exercise can surprise holders.
- Expiry days can be volatile.
- Missing a roll can lead to delivery.
Going deeper
Read as far as you need. Each level builds on the one before it.
After expiry
Beginner
At expiry the contract disappears.3 Any value it had must be captured before or at expiry.
American vs European style
Intermediate
US equity options are American-style: the holder can exercise them on any day up to expiry.2 European-style options can only be exercised at expiry.
Time decay near expiry
Advanced
Time value melts away as expiry nears, for both puts and calls.4 Short-dated options can lose value quickly even when the underlying price does not move.
Common mistakes
Forgetting auto-exercise
An in-the-money option can turn into a large stock position.
Holding futures too long
You may face delivery or forced settlement.
Ignoring time zones
Expiry times differ by exchange.
Buying very short expiries
Little time leaves little room to be right.
